Fort Myers Takes Round 1 in Deciding Game

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels and Dunedin Blue Jays put on a classic Round 1 that was in question until the final game.

In the end, Fort Myers won the deciding contest by a score of 9-4, to take the series 4-3.

"It doesn't get much tighter than that. To win a series in the last game is a thrill," said Alex Olivas, who earned series MVP honors for Fort Myers. "Our guys are breathing a little easier now."

For the series, Olivas hit .333 with a .400 on-base percentage. He had 2 home runs, drove in 8 RBI and scored 4 runs.

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels will play against the St. Lucie Mets in the next round. St. Lucie won their series against the Tampa Tarpons 4 games to 3. The Round 2 schedule will be announced after the Round 1 finishes.

The St. Lucie Mets were paced by a strong offensive output from Melvin Castellano as they downed the Tampa Tarpons 4-3 to win the Round 1.

St. Lucie won the final game by a score of 5-2 at Clover Park to send themselves off to the Round 2.

"I wasn't so much focused on putting up big offensive numbers as I was about ensuring we won the games. So it's mission accomplished there," said shortstop Castellano, who was named MVP.

For the series, the MVP hit .500 with a .531 on-base percentage. He had 0 home runs, drove in 4 RBI and scored 7 runs.

The St. Lucie Mets don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Dunedin Blue Jays - Fort Myers Mighty Mussels series. That series is tied at 3 games apiece. The Round 2 schedule will be announced after the Round 1 finishes.
