Pirates Come Up Short at Buenos Aires, 2-1
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Emece Stadium, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2112 World Baseball Federation season. On the mound was Masao Shimada for the visiting Havana Pirates and Nicky Harrison for the hometown Buenos Aires Tango. In a spirited contest, the Tango pulled out the win, defeating the Pirates by the score of 2-1. Especially impressive was Nicky Harrison. Harrison picked up the win for Buenos Aires, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 7 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Tango had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when center fielder Cham Ho-Dac hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Masao Shimada and made the score 1-0, Tango. Ho-Dac went 1 for 3.
"Good ballgame," said Havana manager Manny Juarez. "But we came up on the short end."
