Chavez Goes Deep Twice in 11-2 Nkali Win
|
With third baseman Roger Chavez leading the charge, the Nigeria Nkali defeated the Melbourne Kangaroos, 11-2, at Lagos Stadium. Chavez, who finished 2nd in the EL in hits with 214 in 2108, was 3-5 with 2 home runs, while scoring 3 times and driving in 3. Admer Imaan, the winning pitcher, is now 5-6. He went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, while fanning 2 and walking 1. The winning streak has now reached 4 games for Nigeria.
Francisco Jorge had a big grand slam home run for the Nkali in the bottom of the first inning. With Nigeria trailing 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Argan Abdeljilil, who is tied for 9th in the EL with a 9.3 K/9 rate, and swatted a home run to left. It was his 9th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Nkali ahead, 4-1.
"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Nigeria manager Dillon Lawson.
