Pittsburgh Claims 3-0 Victory
|
Starting pitcher Jim Womack was a major factor in the 3-0 Pittsburgh Pirates triumph over the Cincinnati Reds. Womack, the winner, moves to 3-11. He threw 5.1 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 1 and giving up 4 walks. Rogelio de Anda closed it out for his 29th save.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Pirates had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fourth, when shortstop Ken Gillingham hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Alfredo Espinosa and made the score 2-0, Pirates. Gillingham went 2 for 3 with 2 singles.
"It's fun when you can help the team win games," said Womack.
The Pirates move to 58-74 with the win, while the Reds drop to 62-69.
