"Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage.

Well, good pitching also beats bad hitting.

Jim Kirchhoff of the Columbus Clippers proved the point at Harbor Park today, holding the Norfolk Tides to 2 hits in a complete game shutout victory.

"Kirchhoff made us look real bad today," Tides manager Jay Duren said in a postgame interview. "He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."

Kirchhoff had 9 strikeouts and gave up no walks as the Clippers took the 4-0 win.

This season Kirchhoff has accumulated no saves, registered a 2.87 ERA and struck out 47 in 59.2 innings. He also has a 2-3 record in no relief appearances.
