Portland Beats Montreal as Nelson Throws 7-0 Shutout
Sunday, June 5th , 2061
Gilbert Nelson of the Portland Hops was on top of his game.
The 22-year-old tantalized the Montreal Expos with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.
"He had the changeup working," Montreal manager John Sweeney said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Portland hurler had 10 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Nelson told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This year, Nelson has compiled a 4-1 record with a 4.50 ERA in 5 starts.
