Fireflies Get Clutch Win, 5-4
|
The Rome Braves got a sterling performance from pitcher Emmanuel Shipp, but the Columbia Fireflies still prevailed, 5-4. Shipp threw 6.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Bret Taveras, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2.1 innings. Columbia is now 19-34, Rome 17-36.
Had Ike Turmel not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 3rd, Turmel hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Fireflies.
Columbia manager Leon de Anda commended his team for "banging out a nice win."
