Shorebirds Take Tight Tangle
|
The Greensboro Grasshoppers got a sterling performance from left fielder Anthony Smith, but the Delmarva Shorebirds still prevailed, 4-3. Smith was 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Cody Niral, now 2-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2.2 innings. Delmarva bumps their record to 34-15 with the win.
East Renton Highlands, Washington-born Eli Cugno came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the eighth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Shorebirds trailing 3-2, he hit a 2-run single to center to put Delmarva on top.
Delmarva manager Dan Lueck was pleased with the team's effort. "Our guys played hard, they played all the way through," he said.
