Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the South Bend Cubs and Lake County Captains.

South Bend picked up a win at Classic Park, bumping off the Lake County Captains, 5-3. Pitcher Richard Lyons was a major reason the Cubs emerged victorious. Lyons got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 3 hits and walked 1 over 8.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs.

South Bend used the clutch hitting of Liam Schmidt to snag the win. The first baseman drilled a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cubs ahead, 5-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.

South Bend manager Mickey Smith was pleased with the team's effort. "Our guys played hard," he said.

At 61-70, South Bend is in 8th place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
