The South Bend Cubs took Ames pitcher Conrad De La Cruz's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium. The final score had South Bend getting past the Sod Poodles, 4-3. De La Cruz went 6.2 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 4. Luke Herrera recorded his 2nd save for South Bend. The Cubs improved their record to 42-54 with the win over Ames.
Brian Engen drew 1 walk in 4 plate appearances for South Bend. The 21-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 3-3 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Alex Gentle. It was his 46th RBI of the season.
Engen told a South Bend Citizen reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
