Starting pitcher David Souttar gave the South Bend Cubs a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Ames Sod Poodles, 3-2, at Community Field. Souttar got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 3 hits and walked 6 over 5.2 innings. He allowed 2 runs. Brantley Judy picked up the save, his 3rd.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Noah Hawkins? The South Bend catcher had a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Cubs on top, 3-1. For the game, Hawkins had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Hawkins said.
The win puts South Bend at 5-5.
