The California Angels beat the Oakland Athletics, 5-1, at Disney Stadium. Starting pitcher Ralph Mayes was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Mayes, now 11-8, was the winner. In 5.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 8, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Patrick Class was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 4 of 4 save opportunities.

The Angels got an important contribution from first baseman Adrian Phillips, who in the bottom of the third punched a 1-0 curveball into right for a 2-run home run. It was his 15th home run of the season and put the Angels ahead, 3-0.

"Every win gets us closer to our ultimate goal," said Phillips.

The Angels lead the Western Region Pacific Division by 2½ games.
