Streaking Yankees Win Another One, 9-2
|
A 3-RBI performance from right fielder Lyle Stephenson, who is tied for 9th in the NL in home runs with 26, led the New York Yankees to a win over the Virginia Black Bears, 9-2. Vic Schramm, the winning pitcher, is now 6-4. He went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, while fanning 2 and walking 1. The first-place Yankees, at 63-34, now lead their division by 2½ games.
Henry Raines hit a 2-run double off Kip Atkins in the top of the fourth, which put the Yankees in front, 3-2. In addition to the double, Raines had 1 single, while going 2 for 5.
"It's fun coming to the ballpark," said Raines, "when you're on this kind of roll."
