Pirates Absorb 7-2 Loss at Disney Stadium
|
California pitcher Mike Watford had a large part in his team subduing the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-2. The opposition could never mount much of a rally against the left-hander. Watford, now 5-6, was the winner. In 8.2 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 0, and allowing 2 runs. With the win, California pushed its record to 44-35.
Julius Minkiewicz had a big 2-run double for the Angels in the bottom of the fourth inning. With California leading 3-2 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a cutter from 27-year old right-handed pitcher Irvin Montano and swatted a double to right. It was his 21st double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Angels ahead, 5-2.
"Mike just went about his business, throwing strikes," said California manager Travis Russell.
