Cardinals Topple Pirates, 12-6, as Gautreau Shines
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-6, at Busch Stadium. The win was due in part to first baseman Asher Gautreau, who hit 3 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored three times. Sam Rhodes was the winner. He's now 4-5. The loser was Boston Pavlacka. The third-place Cardinals now have a record of 36-34.

With St. Louis leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Gautreau hit a splitter from Frank McCoy for a 3-run home run. It was his 22nd home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 6-1.

"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said St. Louis skipper Tommy Bushmaker.
