Harlan Smokies manager Carson Lee knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 20-year-old left-hander Rodney Porter silenced the host Kinston Indians at Ballpark of Kinston. The Smokies shut out the Indians by a final score of 1-0, to give the Smokies a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Series.

Mason Bakman had a direct impact on the outcome. Bakman contributed a run-scoring hit-by-pitch in the top of the seventh inning to put Harlan up, 1-0.

"Rodney was dictating to their hitters," said Harlan manager Carson Lee.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ballpark of Kinston in Kinston.
