The Syracuse Chiefs started the AAA Championship Series in style, winning on the road against the Tucson Sidewinders at Greater Nevada Field by a score of 5-4 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Chiefs designated hitter Max Smallwood excelled. He went 4-5 with 4 doubles.

Syracuse used a timely hit from Ethan Estep to get the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Chiefs ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it made an impact.

Said losing manager Spike Peck: "These are the grinding hard days that all good teams go through, and this is when we've got to stick together and believe in one another."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Greater Nevada Field in Tucson.
