Whitecaps Take 2-1 Lead with 1-0 Win
|
West Michigan Whitecaps manager Dylan Roberts knew it was a gamble to give the start to rookie Júlio César Arevalo. It was a good gamble to take.
Pitching in front of a supportive hometown crowd, the 19-year-old right-hander silenced the visiting Beloit Snappers at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Whitecaps shut out the Snappers by a final score of 1-0, to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Wild Card Series.
Arevalo, a native of Barinas, Venezuela, was dealing all game. He kept Beloit hitters off-balance, while giving the Whitecaps 9 quality innings. Arevalo threw 107 pitches, allowing no hits and striking out 7.
"Júlio César was commanding his pitches," said West Michigan manager Dylan Roberts.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids.
