Hampton Orioles manager Kyle Kovac knew it was a gamble to give the start to rookie Dimitri Sotolongo. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a supportive hometown crowd, the 23-year-old right-hander silenced the visiting Pulaski Yankees at Hampton Stadium. The Orioles shut out the Yankees by a final score of 3-0, to give the Orioles a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Regional Championship Series.

Sotolongo was dominant for Hampton. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits, while racking up 9 strikeouts. He threw 89 pitches over 7.1 innings in the contest.

"Dimitri gave us a heck of an effort," said Hampton manager Kyle Kovac.

Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Calfee Park in Pulaski.
