Gawrys Blasts Goldeyes, 66ers Take Game 1, 16-4
|
The Inland Empire 66ers started the Wild Card Series in dominant fashion, blowing out the host Winnipeg Goldeyes at NBT Bank Stadium by a score of 16-4 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. 66ers designated hitter Beck Gawrys was 5 for 6 with a home run and 4 singles, while scoring 3 times.
Inland Empire used a clutch at-bat from Santiago Montejano to capture the win. The third baseman hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to put the 66ers ahead, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"We didn't pitch good, and when you don't pitch good, you lose," said Winnipeg manager Brian Hotard.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at NBT Bank Stadium in Winnipeg.
