Road Win Lifts Iowa to 1-0 Lead in WCS
|
The Iowa Cubs wasted no time taking the lead in the Wild Card Series, beating the Winnipeg Goldeyes at NBT Bank Stadium by the score of 5-3. The win gives Iowa a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Cubs right-hander A.J. Abston threw 7.2 innings of 3-hit ball.
Iowa used the clutch hitting of Yesmuel Abreu to snag the win. The center fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cubs ahead, 5-3. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.
"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Abreu said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at NBT Bank Stadium in Winnipeg.
