The 18-year-old rookie on the mound turned out to be the least of the Coral Springs Manatees worries.

Giving a high-pressure playoff start to youngster Blake Maze seemed like a risky move for the Manatees, but it was one of the few things that went right at Ed Smith Stadium. Maze tossed 6.1 solid innings, but it was all for naught after Coral Springs dropped a 4-2 decision. With the win, Hollywood took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 Regional Championship Series.

Hollywood used a timely hit from Pablo Gutiérrez to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Spoonbills ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a difference-maker.

"We lost," Coral Springs manager Angel Mendoza said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ed Smith Stadium in Coral Springs.
