Chicago Defeats Cleveland, 3-2
|
The rain could not keep the home crowd from enjoying a good ballgame.
The bats were silent much of the day at Tecumseh Field. But 26-year old catcher Dwight Mattocks produced just enough offense to carry the Cubs past the Cleveland Indians, 3-2. Mattocks was 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Jackson Baione snagged the win in relief. He goes to 5-5 on the season. Dedrick McAdoo suffered the loss. Jack Smitherman wrapped it up, recording his 2nd save.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for J.P. Porras? The Chicago right fielder had a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Cubs on top, 3-2. For the game, Porras had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"There are no moral victories," said losing manager Justin Jackson.
The Cubs improved their record to 30-33 with the win over Cleveland.
