Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Hummingbirds
|
The Pembroke Pines Herons got a sterling performance from pitcher Lars Porcaro, but the Sierra Vista Hummingbirds still prevailed, 6-1. Porcaro threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Sierra Vista reliever Ricky Hoyt picked up the win, raising his record to 5-1. James Brown was tagged with the loss. Their 31-35 record puts the Hummingbirds 5th in the Arizona Rookie League South Division.
Sierra Vista used the timely hitting of Kirk Chieves to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Hummingbirds on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Chieves.
