Columbia and Jonesboro got after it at Spirit Communications Park.

The Jonesboro Growlers got a sterling performance from pitcher Brian Valadez, but the Columbia Fireflies still prevailed, 5-2. Valadez threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball. The win went to Yancarlos Mendez in relief, making him now 1-0. José Torres took the loss for Jonesboro. Izaiah Pearson recorded his 11th save for Columbia.

Minneapolis, Minnesota-born Aristo Gammage came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and the Fireflies trailing 2-1, he hit a 2-run single to center to put Columbia on top.

Said losing manager Cesar Mejia: "Obviously, we wished for a better outcome."

The Fireflies now own a record of 62-68.
