Hooks Get 2-1 Win Versus St. Petersburg
|
The Corpus Christi Hooks defeated the St. Petersburg Flying Squirrels, 2-1, in Southern League action at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi pitcher Maurice Akinkuade had a standout performance. Corpus Christi reliever Seymour Everidge was the winner. His record is now 3-3. Dwight Dunham took the loss. Thad Keenan was credited with the save for Corpus Christi, his 21st of the season.
The Flying Squirrels had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hooks going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old first baseman Mike Stengel came to the plate. Stengel hit a solo home run on a 1-0 sinker from St. Petersburg hurler Dwight Dunham. It was Stengel's 11th home run of the year.
"The old adage is true," said Akinkuade. "Good pitching stops good hitting."
With the win over St. Petersburg, the Hooks improved to 61-62.
