The Boston Red Sox got a sterling performance from pitcher Mike Mason, but the Chicago Cubs still prevailed, 3-1. Mason threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The 4th-place Cubs raised their record to 27-32.

It could have been a different outcome for Chicago, had it not been for Lincoln Richards, the 26-year old catcher . Richards contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to put Chicago up, 1-0.

Richards told a Chicago Chronicle reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
