Brunell Slugs Black Bears to 14-12 Win
Virginia and Atlanta exchanged punches and in the end the Black Bears won the slugfest.

In a game featuring no shortage of runs, the Virginia Black Bears defeated the Atlanta Braves, 14-12. One of the hitting stars was Virginia first baseman Juan Brunell. Brunell, who finished 5th in the AL in RBI with 120 last year, was 3-5 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Calvin Kuhns earned the save, his 11th, for the Black Bears.

Virginia used the timely hitting of Casimer Bureau to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Black Bears on top, 11-10. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"It was offense that won us the game," said winning manager A.J. Trentman.

The 5th-place Black Bears have a record of 23-32.
