In Extras, Drive Beat Braves, 3-2
|
The Greenville Drive faced a tough opponent in Rome pitcher Ric Tew, but still scratched out a win at State Mutual Stadium by a final score of 3-2 in 10 innings. Tew went 6.1 innings and allowed no runs. Greenville reliever Eugénio Gamino picked up the win, upping his record to 5-7. Mason Dawson was saddled with the loss. Farris Jefferson closed out the game, earning his 14th save.
Greenville used the timely hitting of Nick DeVries to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Drive on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
Afterward, Drive manager E.J. Boggan was ebullient. "That was a fun game to coach," he told a group of reporters, adding, "I hope it was just as fun to watch."
Greenville is now 46-67, Rome 61-52.
