Cleveland Indians starter Rick Benfer hurled his team past the Montreal Expos, 2-1. Picking up the save was fireballing right-hander Lee Shape. The third-place Indians improved to 29-19.
Lon White, who finished 3rd in the NL in on-base percentage with .416 in 2053, had a direct impact on the outcome. White contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put Cleveland up, 2-1.
In postgame remarks, White hailed his team's "single-minded focus."
