Bears Lose, 4-1, to Birmingham
|
Birmingham starter Will Leach put the Newark offense in a vise grip. The left-hander relied heavily on his slider in leading the Barons to a 4-1 win. Leach, the winner, moves to 7-5. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 3 and giving up 3 walks. With this game in the books, Birmingham is 66-50, Newark 53-63.
Birmingham took a 4-1 lead on Dylan Nicita's 2nd home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Nicita hit in the top of the ninth, left Newark pitcher Eduardo Serrano visibly frustrated.
"Will just settled in and did what he does," said Birmingham manager Matt Baker.
