Leo Velez pitched well enough to win, but it was not to be. The Asheville Tourists, despite Velez's fine outing, dropped a 2-0 decision to the Hickory Crawdads at McCormick Field. Jesse Richard snagged the win in relief. He goes to 2-5 on the season. Leo Velez suffered the loss. Christopher Havill got the save, his 13th in 20 chances.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Valentin Montano? The 23-year old catcher Montano stroked a 2-run double in the top of the eighth inning to put Hickory up, 2-0. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
"Makes our job easier," said Montano, "when our pitchers shut the opposition down."
Hickory sits in 7th place in the South Atlantic League Carolina Division at 45-55.
