Barons Use Late Surge to Win
|
Starting pitcher Tom Spears gave the Birmingham Barons a rock-solid performance, helping them defeat the Durham Bulls, 2-1, in 10 innings. The win belonged to Hudson Wilt in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Lucas Williams took the loss for Durham. Birmingham, at 74-40, occupies second place in the International League Southwest Division.
Birmingham got a clutch hit from Cole Clovis. The second baseman launched a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a kill shot.
During his postgame press conference, Barons manager Matt Baker told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
