Leon Harlan never let the Athletics get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Reds to a win, 2-0. Harlan yielded no runs over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. His record improves to 7-6. Osvaldo Ortiz recorded the save for Cincinnati, his 20th of the season.

Luke Dolezal provided a timely hit. The Cincinnati left fielder delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the seventh inning to put the Reds on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.

Dolezal said his team "played with a purpose."
