With first baseman Rick Sheley leading the charge, the Newark Bears defeated the Wilkes-Barre Barons, 7-4, at Valiants Ballpark. Sheley went 3-4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. Getting the save was Ben McPherson, his 10th. The win boosts the Bears to 24-16. The loss puts the Barons at 16-24.

Had Rich Cooper not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Cooper hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Bears.

"We're feeling good in this clubhouse right now after that one," Sheley told the Newark Daily News.
