Bears Use Late Surge to Win
|
The Syracuse Chiefs could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Jim Tschopp into a win. Instead, the Newark Bears prevailed, 8-2. Tschopp threw 5.2 innings allowing 1 run. Ryan Iwanicki snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits over 2.2 innings. He's now 3-2 on the season. The victory gives Newark a record of 18-18.
Victor Stefani came through with a big-time hit for Newark. The third baseman smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give his team the lead, 5-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
"We need better swings, better at-bats," said losing manager Matt Thompson.
