Barons Clip Bears, 5-4
|
The Birmingham Barons dealt the Newark Bears a 5-4 loss at Raley Field. Cooper Martin was the star on offense. He went 3-4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. Alfonso Barbosa earned the win to go to 3-1. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with no walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Newark falls to 15-9.
Wenceslas Petit had a big 2-run home run for the Barons in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Birmingham leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a cutter from 30-year old left-handed pitcher Willard Wernick and punished it. The result was his 3rd home run of the season, which put the Barons on top, 3-0.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Newark manager Shark McGee. "The effort was great."
