Phillips, Stripers March to 7-1 Victory
The Gwinnett Stripers topped the Newark Bears, 7-1, the lion's share of the credit going to designated hitter Kevin Phillips. On the day, Phillips was 3 for 3 with a home run, a triple, and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times for the Stripers. The win brings the Stripers to 3-11, an awful start for a team that made the playoffs just last season.

It could have been a different outcome for Gwinnett, had it not been for Junior McGowan, the 26-year old second baseman . McGowan contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put Gwinnett up, 6-1.

"To get where we want to as a team, we all have to do things out of our comfort zone," McGowan told the Gwinnett Daily News.
