The Newark Bears weathered a fine game by Rochester designated hitter Owen Celmer to upend the Norsemen, 4-3, at Valiants Ballpark. Celmer hit 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Otto Tripp earned the win to go to 1-1. He allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. Picking up the save was 25-year old left-handed pitcher Kirk Long.

Ricky Jager helped out the Newark cause in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run-scoring ground out. For the game, the center fielder was 1 for 4.

"Sometimes, you can be too aggressive," said Rochester manager Rich Soriano. "You need to let the game come to you."
