Getting offensive support from Jose Stevens, the Montreal Expos topped the New York Yankees, 8-2. Stevens was 3-3 with 2 doubles and a walk. He scored 3 times for the Expos. Montreal reliever Bob Charles got the win, raising his record to 12-8. Mike Mason was tagged with the loss. The second-place Expos improved to 76-61.

The Expos got an important contribution from catcher Ricky Sytsma, who in the bottom of the fourth punched a 2-2 curveball into left for a 3-run home run. It was his 20th home run of the season and put the Expos ahead, 6-0.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Stevens said.
