Venceslao Martínez played a key role in a gritty 2-1 Surprise Sidewinders win against the Sedona Steers. Surprise reliever Pirro Nunez was the winner. His record is now 2-0. P.J. Pausini took the loss. Arron Carnahan earned the save for Surprise, his 2nd of the year.
Had Jacob Nickles not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Nickles hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Sidewinders.
Nickles said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
Surprise sits in first place in the Arizona Rookie League North Division at 28-16.
