Manatees Snatch Late Win
|
The Coral Springs Manatees defeated the Ahwatukee Roughnecks, 8-4, at Ed Smith Stadium. Coral Springs left fielder Ira Phillips had a superb performance. He was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Coral Springs raised its record to 13-10 with the win.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Evan Cockrell came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Ahwatukee pitcher Frank Gentry, he hit a 2-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Coral Springs on top, 3-2.
In postgame comments to the Coral Springs Citizen, Phillips said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
