Wednesday, July 27th , 2033
6 hits in a game has always been a big milestone in baseball -- 6 hits in a game gets a player's name in the record book, win or lose. Andres Suniga got his name recorded today, but the Detroit (FCL) Tigers picked up the win at Charlotte Sports Park, topping the Tampa Bay (FCL) Rays, 6-5.
"He bushwhacked us," said winning manager Brian Barkley. "We were lucky to come out ahead."
Suniga, who is tied for 6th in the in runs scored with 24, spoke to reporters in the clubhouse following the game, saying his nerves only set in once he was on the cusp of the milestone.
"I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime day," the center fielder said. "I think the coaches could tell I was going to be ready to swing at anything close. That's why my third base coach told me to calm down and wait for a good pitch. That got me back on track."
Andres Suniga singled in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Dave Craig in the 7th, flied out in the 9th, singled in the 11th, singled in the 14th and singled in the 16th.
This season, Suniga has banged out 48 hits in 178 at-bats for a .270 average with 3 home runs. He is getting on base at a .316 pace and his totals also include 7 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
