Juan Vargas Blanks West Michigan, 2-0
Saturday, August 2nd , 2031
Juan Vargas of the Fort Wayne TinCaps was on top of his game.
The 24-year-old tantalized the West Michigan Whitecaps with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 2-0.
"He had the changeup working," West Michigan manager Seth McClung said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Fort Wayne hurler had 10 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.
Vargas told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
In 7 starts this year, Vargas has crafted a 3-2 record and a 2.24 ERA.
