In his first year in the league, Joel Hensley paid huge dividends on his club's financial investment. He captured the 2028 National League Rookie of the Year Award for his spectacular season.

The Miami rookie phenom started 35 games, tossed 220.2 innings and chalked up a 9-16 record. Hensley struck out 238 batters, walked 105 and held opponents to a .217 batting average while compiling a 3.34 ERA.

He received 17 first place votes out of a possible 30. Mike Barrow of the San Francisco Giants finished second in voting with 7 first place votes, while Frankie Tostado of the Arizona Diamondbacks finished third with 4 first place votes.
