Samuel Boyle of the Lansing Lugnuts was on top of his game.

The 26-year-old tantalized the Cedar Rapids Kernels with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 2-0.

"He had the changeup working," Cedar Rapids manager Brian Dinkelman said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Lansing hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Boyle told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Boyle has made 12 starts, thrown 83.1 innings, fanned 85 batters and walked 18. His won-lost record is 5-4 with a 2.70 ERA.
