Late Rally by Tigers Locks Up 6-4 Win
|
The Detroit Tigers took Minnesota pitcher Matthew Matthijs's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Target Field. The final score had Detroit getting past the Twins, 6-4. Matthijs went 6.2 innings and allowed no runs, striking out 10. Reliever Justin Wilson picked up the win. His record improves to 3-0. Shawn Guilliams, who is a two-time All-Star, took the loss. Earning the save was Junior Garcia. He's now cashed in 3 of 6 save opportunities.
Detroit used the timely hitting of Carter Smith to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Tigers on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We're a talented bunch when we're playing well," said Smith. "I think we showed that here."
The losing skid has reached 7 games for Minnesota.
