Marlins Mow Down Reds, 10-4
|
With center fielder Slade Caldwell leading the charge, the Miami Marlins defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 10-4, at Great American Ball Park. Caldwell, who finished 5th in the NL in stolen bases with 34 last year, went 2-3 with a home run, a triple, and 2 walks. He scored 3 times. The winning pitcher was Joel Hensley. His record now stands at 12-12. The left-hander went 7.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits for the Marlins. Miami, at 69-70, occupies 4th place in the National League East Division.
Miami used the bat of Ken Quirk to get the win. The second baseman spanked a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Marlins ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it altered the outcome.
Miami manager Brian Berkshire commended his team for "putting the hammer down."
