Mets Lose Despite Valiant Effort by Mercado
|
New York first baseman Esteban Mercado was sensational. He slugged 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Washington beat the Mets, 7-5. Washington reliever Nathan Webb picked up the win. Andres Munoz, who finished 3rd in the AL in saves with 39 in 2025, took the loss for New York. Anthony Molina closed it out for Washington, earning his 20th save.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Derek Curiel came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing New York pitcher Andres Munoz, he hit a 0-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Washington on top, 6-5.
"We just try to have good at-bats, whether we're winning, losing, or tied," said Curiel.
Washington leads the National League East Division by 3 games.
