Pirates Suffer 5-1 Road Loss
|
The rain did not keep New York and Pittsburgh from finishing their game.
Matt Allan never let the Pirates get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his curveball, to pitch the Mets to a win, 5-1. Evan Phillips earned his 2nd save in 5 chances.
Elly De La Cruz had a big 2-run home run for the Mets in the bottom of the second inning. With New York leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a sinker from 27-year old right-handed pitcher Po-Yu Chen and swatted a home run to right. It was his 21st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mets ahead, 3-0.
Said losing manager Brian Boyd: "The at-bats, obviously, needed to be better."
The 4th-place Mets improved to 60-70.
